What if trusting God in the small, everyday moments could transform your faith? Whether you’re navigating marriage, starting a career, or figuring out life on your own, those moments of trust often feel larger than life. This story shows how deeply God cares about your everyday needs. Scripture says, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” As you read, consider how trusting God might change the way you approach challenges in your own life

God Gave Us a Different Kind of Dove

You’ve heard the saying, "cleanliness is next to godliness." Well, as a newly married young couple, we wanted to start our marriage by being faithful to each other until the end of our lives, hopefully in old age. My new husband had a very unhappy childhood and grew up in an ungodly home, except for one grandmother who taught him that 10 cents out of every dollar belonged to God, not himself. So, we gave $3.90 of our $39 weekly income as a tithe to his mother as a love offering since we didn’t have a church to attend.

We also wanted to pray over our meals—usually hot dogs because that’s what we normally ate—until I learned to cook something different. Praying over meals was new to us, so we took turns saying a simple prayer we’d heard in the past: “God is great, God is good, and we thank Him for this food.” The first few times, we were embarrassed and laughed like the kids we were, but as we grew closer to the Lord, we began praying from our hearts.

Our $39 weekly income, minus the $3.90 tithe, didn’t stretch far, so we learned to pray for our daily needs—food, rent, etc. We never had any money left over. But we were cleaning up our lives, inside and out, the way we felt the Lord would want us to. We were learning to trust Him and pray for everything. One specific need we prayed for was soap. It cost 10 cents a bar, but we didn’t have even that. So, we prayed.

God is so good. When I went to check our mail at the post office, there was a sample bar of soap! Now, we could be clean both inside and out. This might sound silly to some, but to us, it was a miracle. God saw two young people learning to trust Him for both the big and the small things.

When we prayed over our meal that night, it was truly from the heart: “Thank you, Lord” came sincerely from within. I had prayed that first simple prayer, “God is great, God is good,” but that night, my husband Bill led us in prayer, thanking the Lord for providing for all our needs. Truly, cleanliness is next to godliness.

Key Takeaway

It’s easy to forget that God cares about the details—the daily bread, the soap, the simple things. But as we’re reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we should “in every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Even the small miracles are a reflection of His provision. The next time you’re in need, remember this story. Trust Him with what you have, and you might just find that He provides in unexpected ways—maybe even with a bar of soap.
